Little Village – Communications Manager

If so, maybe you could be Little Village’s first ever Communications Manager.

Little Village has grown to be one of the largest baby banks in the UK in the three years since it launched. In that time, as well as supporting 4000+ families who are struggling across London, we have led the way in raising awareness about the need for organisations like ours. We are a small organisation with a big ambition. We don’t want to exist and have always set out to be more than a successful sticking plaster to a broken system. We aim to play an influential role in tackling child poverty at a systemic level. We know from experience that we have an opportunity to engage the public at quite a deep and emotional level with our work. We use that opportunity to reframe poverty as a systemic rather than individual issue; and as something we can solve, rather than something that will be with us forever.

We have recently agreed a strategic partnership with the Joseph Rowntree Foundation, reflecting our ambition to have a national impact as well as making a real difference on the ground. We are looking for someone to pioneer a different approach to grassroots communications and campaigns work designed to meet this big goal of tackling child poverty, so we can make the most of the current interest and energy around baby banks.

START DATE: January 2020
DURATION: 12 month contract including 1 month probation period. Potential to extend contract subject to further funding.
HOURS: approx. 28 hours a week, flexible but ideally with availability Monday to Wednesday.
SALARY: £30,000 per annum, prorated
LOCATION: You’ll be based across our three sites in Kings Cross, Balham and Peckham, with the option for some home-based working

Job role and purpose

You will work closely with our community of parent activists and supporters to develop and deliver Little Village’s communications strategy, focused on the goal of destigmatising poverty an encouraging more compassionate and kind responses to people raising their children on low incomes. Through this work you will help us play a part in changing attitudes and beliefs about child poverty, motivating people to take action and opening up spaces for different kinds of conversations.

About you

You’ll be passionate about tackling child poverty and motivated by our values of love, solidarity, thriving and sustainability. You’ll be thoughtful about the importance of language when it comes to communicating about child poverty, and you will be inspired by the work around framing poverty in ways that inspire action and change. You will be energised by working alongside people in a participatory way, to bring out their best, and you’ll be excited about this opportunity to grow a grassroots-led communications role. You’ll enjoy the buzz of working quickly and building supportive external partnerships to help us amplify the voices of the parents we’re working with.

Key activities

• Work with our community of parents and supporters and the staff team to co-design Little Village’s communications strategy, across public affairs, press, social media, internal and external brand communications.
• Develop key messages, leading on creating and maintaining appropriate and consistent language and terminology across all media and for all audiences.
• Build external relationships with media partners and other platforms, to amplify the voices of the parents we’re working with. This includes producing press releases and being the first point of contact with the media, but it also involves taking a longer view of partnerships we could develop to further our goals.
• Manage our social media presence, sourcing and sharing newsworthy information from across Little Village and our wider network. We will work with you to recruit a volunteer team to support your work in this area.
• Developing resources and processes to ensure that every parent who decides to share a story has an empowering and positive experience, and is supported before, during, and after the interview/engagement.
• With support from JRF, identify and create opportunities for meetings between our parent community and other audiences, including journalists, professionals and politicians.
• Act as ‘brand guardian’, ensuring we are consistent in communicating our key messages in ways that put the voices of the families we support at the heart of everything we do.
• Overall responsibility for the look and feel of Little Village’s website, ensuring it reflects our work accurately and is easy to navigate for our key audiences.

Essential skills

• At least 5 years’ experience in another communications role, with proven track record in developing and executing communications strategy
• Tech-savvy, with a good understanding of how to maximise impact across all social media platforms
• Keen sense of newsworthiness and what makes stories interesting from different audience perspectives
• Experience of working with vulnerable adults/children and the media
• Team player who knows how to get the best out of people

Desirable but not essential

• Lived experience of raising children on low incomes
• Experience of campaigning and public affairs work
• Knowledge of movement building and community organising
• Previous work in the third sector
