Job title: HR and Employment Rights Adviser

Part of Next Step Edinburgh - providing support for people experiencing difficulties in the workplace and those seeking employment

Reporting to: Chief Executive (this line management may be subject to review)

Location: Citizens Advice Edinburgh - Leith Bureau, 23 Dalmeny Street, Edinburgh, EH6 8PG or Depending on the needs of the service, work may be carried out at outreach locations as required and our other Bureaux:

- 58 Dundas Street, Edinburgh, EH3 6QZ
- 8A&B Bath Street, EH15 1EY
- 137 Dundee Street, EH11

Salary: £26,650 per annum Pro-rata

Benefits: 25 days annual leave and 10 public holidays pro rata and a 7% employers contribution pension Pro-rata

Hours: Part Time - 28 hours per week

Job purpose

Successful candidates will have a solid background in Human Resources and/or Employability Services, have a sound knowledge of Employment Law and have experience of dealing with complex employment relations cases.

Successful candidates must also have a desire to support people in disadvantaged communities and be pro-active in helping them to realise and fulfil their potential and to sustain long term and meaningful employment.

A can do attitude is essential, as this new role will require creativity, flexibility and a willingness to work hard to establish effective client engagement. Citizens Advice Edinburgh is an independent charity delivering free, confidential and impartial advice and support to people living and working in Edinburgh. Every year, we deal with over 3,000 enquiries for employment advice, handling cases including unpaid wages, unfair dismissal, TUPE, irregular contracts and discrimination. Over the last 5 years, we have established ourselves as a quality advice service for employees, helping them to understand and defend their rights.

The Fair work Framework was published in March 2016 and this new post will be responsible for helping Citizens Advice Edinburgh to play a key role in delivering its successful outcomes.

This post is part time 28 hours per week and will be based primarily at our Leith Bureau, with travel throughout the city as required.This role will be ideally suited to someone with an extensive background in HR, Employment Advice and/or a legal qualification with experience in Employment law.

Key deliverables

• Oversee the delivery of employment advice within CAE, including supporting and mentoring volunteer advisers.
• Provide specialist employment advice to clients of CAE as required.
• Recruit, maintain and support a team of volunteer employment advisers and ensure timely and accurate handling of cases, in line with our policies, procedures and audit requirements.
• Engage and work with internal and external stakeholders to promote the successful delivery of this service.
• Support client to retain employment, including working directly with their employer
• Help clients to resolve employment issues
• Help clients to remain in work.
• Provide evidence on the impact and outcomes of this service.

Person Specification



• Solid background in Human Resources and/or Employability Services
• Solid understanding of up to date UK employment legislation and its practical application, in line with HR processes and best practice.
• Demonstrable experience of dealing with complex employee relations cases
• Experience of training/coaching including using a range of learning methods such as presentation, facilitation, coaching, peer and social learning techniques.
• Experience in coaching and developing others in providing employment advice and representation.
• An evidenced commitment to continuous professional development.
• A commitment to the Vision, Mission and Values of Citizens Advice Edinburgh
• Proficient in use of IT systems and Microsoft Office programs including Outlook word and Powerpoint with a willingness to learn new systems.

• Educated to degree level or equivalent
• Understanding and previous use of publically available materials for employment advice eg ACAS, HSE and EHRC
• Experience and understanding of the voluntary sector
• Experience of Employability Services
