Overview: Main Purpose and Scope of the Role(s)
We are looking to hire dedicated organisers who will continue to build our community of tenants and support our members to work towards our goals.
The focus of the team will be two-fold.
Firstly, to organise and grow our community of tenants across Greater Manchester, engaging renters from all walks of life with our project the ‘Future of our Housing’. The outcome of the project will be a manifesto co-created by tenants across Greater Manchester that will empower us to speak about our experiences as renters and outline our vision for the housing sector.
Secondly, to promote the campaigning activities of the Tenants Union. To support member groups to use the Future of Housing Manifesto to further our aims, engage with key policy makers and to build local and national campaigning activity.
Both staff members will work closely with the Board of Directors at Tenants Union UK and the Steering Committee of the project: Future of our Housing. As well as campaigning and community organising, the staff team will work with the Board of Directors on the operational running of the organisation and on securing future funding for the staff team.
What we’re looking for
The skills and experience listed below is what we are looking for across the staff team - so no 1 person is expected to have everything written here. Anything on the person spec marked essential is what we expect from all applicants, and anything marked desirable is what we are looking for in at least one candidate.
So if you've got some great campaigning experience but haven't done any fundraising before, please still apply. If someone else applies who is a great fundraiser but hasn't done much campaigning, we'd look at hiring you as a team.
Breakdown: Key Duties and Responsibilities
➢ Building relationships with local support and community services around Greater Manchester
➢ Building relationships with local authorities, local institutions and their representatives
➢ Creating organising guides for volunteers to take an active role in the project
➢ Organising volunteers to take part in promotion of events and campaigns
➢ Supporting and strengthening the skills and capacity in our volunteers through training and workshops
➢ Facilitating small working groups with vulnerable tenants, managing safeguarding procedures where appropriate
➢ Support our local groups in the convening of events
➢ Support volunteers to create and harness content from events (blogs, videos, podcasts etc.) to use as ongoing campaigning tools
➢ Plan and deliver promotional events for the manifesto’s release
Campaigning & Stakeholder Management
➢ Lead on stakeholder management of national partners
➢ Building relationships with campaign organisations and NGOs to support the project
➢ Working with members to create campaign materials
➢ Supporting volunteers to take part in promotion of events and campaigns
➢ Lead on updating the website and creating communication materials for the project
➢ Responsible for Tenants Union UK’s communication outputs and social media channels
➢ Working with members to produce content for social media and other platforms to promote local group and internal activity on the national stage
➢ Project manage the write up of the manifesto, working with all stakeholders to create a clear and inspiring set of demands
➢ Support volunteers to promote and communicate their campaigns through local and social media
➢ Working to ensure Tenants Union UK’s financial sustainability and growing the organisation’s funding base.
➢ Prepare and submit funding applications with input from the Tenants Union UK’s Board of Directors
➢ Maintain relationships with current funders; research and build relationships with new potential funding sources.
➢ Implement the fundraising strategy, in line with the agreed strategic priorities of Tenants Union UK
➢ As part of a small team you will be expected to assist with any operational duties that are required to run a small office

Essential Skills & Experience
- Excellent time and project management skills, including the ability to prioritise limited resources to maximise impact
- Excellent organisational skills and attention to detail
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to influence and persuade others
- Experience of managing and motivating volunteers in a project or campaign setting
- IT literate including Email, Word, Excel, as well as Google apps
Desirable Skills & Experience
- Experience managing and updating websites and social media channels
- Excellent facilitation skills; the ability to ensure all voices are heard and respected, as well as making sure clear and timely decisions are reached
- Demonstrable success with fundraising
- Previous experience or knowledge with handling finances or budgeting
- Experience with data-handling or creating systems to information
- Experience delivering winning campaigns
- Experience in developing positive relationships with strategically important external bodies
- Experience in event planning and management
- Ability to build relationships; able to proactively identify, explore and realise new partnerships
- An open and collaborative leadership style, including willingness to be accountable to others and an ability to bring out the best in others
- An interest in housing, community organising and/or social justice
- Resilience, particularly when faced with setbacks
- Enthusiasm for, and commitment to, the goals of Tenants Union UK
- Proactive attitude, drive and enthusiasm to carry out projects to conclusion

Terms and Conditions
Contract: The roles are for 18 months fixed term contract with a 6 month probationary period.
Salary: £22,000 pro rata
Location: Bridge5Mill, 22a Beswick Street, Ancoats, Manchester, M4 7HR
Hours: 30 hours per week, with the expectation of working 4 days between Monday - Friday. Post holders are expected to work the occasional evening or weekend for time off in lieu. Flexible working arrangements will be considered.
Holiday: 25 days pro rata in addition to public holidays
