Successful international design & storytelling studio seeks senior editor-writer-creative person to work with founder, David McCandless, on major new projects.

Information is Beautiful (IIB)  is dedicated to visualising the world’s data, information and knowledge across many different topics and subject areas. Our small team produces books, individual graphics, artworks, interactive visualisations, animations, performance pieces, and workshops internationally.

We’re about to start on a new, major project of extreme awesomeness with a global reach and an amazing theme. We’re looking for a creative and experienced senior editor to work alongside founder, David McCandless, to spearhead, manage, write & research on this project – and other satellite things.  As well as drive the production process and manage a small, talented team.

Despite our designery work and emphasis on data, our process is distinctly journalistic. Concept- and story-driven, heavy on research. It strives to be multi-perspective, balanced and cleanly structured so audiences can make their own minds up about topics.

So we’re looking for someone with a strong editorial, probably journalistic, story-driven background, a range of different interest areas and a near unslakeable thirst for learning more.

We’re looking for someone who is / has a…

• Experienced editor, with an excellent track record in researching and developing engaging stories across different platforms
• 5+ years experience in story-driven environment (pref. journalism or publishing)
• Strong, versatile writer in English (with clips, examples)
• Excellent editorial pedigree
• Interested in story-telling through graphics/visualization (experience a bonus)
• Hell, loves the idea communicating complex stories through graphics & design
• Passionate about journalism, facts, truth and beauty
• Proven record managing and motivating creative teams
• Bold self-starter, comfortable working in small, flexible, remote / virtual teams
• Self-motivated, independent and able to work remotely
• Self-sufficient and proactive, an initiator and driver of ideas
• Interested in design/visualisation or code
• Familiar with IIB’s work and ethos
• Able to turn sometimes technical or complex information into something appealing to a mass audience
• Experienced in managing budgets, projects & timelines
• Solid nose for a story, good ideas, strong concepts
• Good numeracy and excellent attention to detail

Bonus but not essential

• Aptitude in science or maths or some technical discipline
• Some commercial background and client management experience
• Project management skills
• London, Europe or East Coast US based time-zone
• Data-visualisation experience

Duties/core responsibilities

• Manage & direct multiple creative projects simultaneously
• Schedule & shepherd projects along a defined creative process to completion
• Research diverse topics, inc. online data & info gathering, sourcing & quizzing experts
• Develop & hone proposals and concepts
• Liaise with clients and collaborators
• Write some social media content
• Some web writing (blog posts, tweets, newsletters)
• Maintain quality control, tone of voice and editorial character of IIB
• Recruit editorial staff, freelancers & collaborators
• Potentially represent IIB at events & conferences

What we offer

• Time: negotiable, 3-4-5 days per week, part / full time, remote, on your own time + extra days here & there
• £50-£70K ($65 – $90K USD) pro-rata depending on experience – or freelance day-rate equivalent
